THE CLIENT Nyehaus is an art gallery, owned by collector and entrepreneur Tim Nye. Located in the National Arts Club in New York City’s Gramercy Park, Nyehaus is slightly off the beaten path, both conceptually and geographically. As part of his mission, Tim demonstrates a full commitment to the artists whose work he chooses to exhibit and to the collectors and galleries patronizing the gallery.
THE PROJECT BRIEF In spring 2005, Tim Nye invited Helicopter to design the catalog for an exhibition featuring the work of Martin Kippenberger. The principal challenge was to bundle two disparate bodies of the artist's work into one cohesive package. Helicopter designed and packaged the catalog as a box set containing two booklets, a poster and sticker, in which the box itself converted to a display case for the contents. The resulting piece was so successful that the gallery contracted Helicopter to design its identity, collateral and exhibition catalogs (24 and counting).
RE-DEFINING THE ARTIST CATALOG Both a tremendous opportunity and a challenge, each exhibition catalog is treated like a new project with no set design guidelines to follow. Each one is designed to respond to the intent and unique voice of the featured artist. To that end, Helicopter researches each artist’s work and the particular collection being showcased, then develops a visual and editorial style that reflects that level of understanding.
Helicopter oversees every aspect of the design and production, collaborating intimately with its printing partners (Graphicom, Nava and Imagine! Print Solutions) to produce finished catalogs and posters that represent a level of quality and innovation that we believe in unrivaled in the gallery space. The resulting catalogs - limited, numbered editions - are in essence elaborate marketing materials for Nyehaus.
REDESIGNING THE BRAND Following the success of the catalogs, Helicopter was invited to re-design the gallery’s identity and collateral. Since the dominant idea of Nyehaus, like many galleries, is its ability to change for each artist, we build a visual identity system in which a varied color palette could be used to as a metaphor for the individuality within the brand. The gallery’s website (at www.nyehaus.com) is similarly dynamic in its design.
